BenZel is Umi Takahashi (15) and Yoko Watanabe (16). Originally from Osaka; Umi and Yoko both travelled to New York through their local foreign exchange program. They met in early 2012 through an online message board about ankle socks and quickly discovered they each had a profound appreciation for 90’s R&B and J. Dilla. After many failed attempts to create a hypoallergenic ankle sock, they decided to put their efforts toward other creative ventures. Following hours of soul searching; they decided to start BenZel.
Telex - Twist À St. Tropez (Les Chats Sauvages Cover) c.1978
…The Belgian synth-pop group Telex was formed in 1978 with the intention of “Making something really European, different from rock, without guitar — and the idea was electronic music.” Mixing the aesthetics of disco, punk and experimental electronic music, they released a stripped-down synthesized cover version of “Twist à St. Tropez” by Les Chats Sauvages.

Gomma All Stars and Peaches reworked four songs from the legendary Casablanca records catalogue. A new version of Donna Summer’s “Our Love” by Telonius on which Harold Faltermeyer contributes some analogue Keyboards. A 90’s pop version of Stephanie Mills’ classic “You Can’t Run From My Love” by Mr. Munk. A cover of the Skatt Bros’ “Walk The Night” by The Phenomenal Handclap Band and Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” - best known as the song from Flashdance - by Moullinex.

Ellie Goulding & Xaphoon Jones - High For This (The Weeknd Cover)
…Ellie’s cover of The Weeknd’s High For This debuted a few days ago at Neon Gold. Her version of the opening track on House of Balloons (the introduction to Abel Tesfaye’s grinding synths and pained falsetto for many) is less dark but possibly more haunting.
